SUPERFLEX
Artwork Description
The Nursery Garden paintings are conceived as a vibrant painting series documenting medicinal plants native to the islands of Mayotte and La Reunion off the coast of Madagascar. Conceived as a documentary form of the plant collection established in Jardin la Nurserie / The Nursery Garden, a hospital art commission by SUPERFLEX, the series explores the cultural properties of common medicinal practices in this island region. Each painting documents a collection of plants with common medicinal properties native to one or both islands. The paintings are composed in opposing complementary colors that reflect both the distinct ethno-linguistic cultures of Mayotte and La Reunion and the diverging approaches of modern and traditional medicine practiced there. Emphasizing the complex cultural background of each island, the paintings are titled according to the ailment the collection of plants are used to treat and subtitled with each plant name in French, Latin, and Creol or Shimaore - local dialects distinct to the two islands. Medicinal plants in The Nursery Garden/Migraine: Mwana be ntiti - Agérate faux-conyze- Ageratum conyzoides Kanza m´dzada - Gros baume - Ocimum gratissimum Marie Jolaine - Marjolaine - Origanum majorana L.
