Carlos Leppe
Artwork Description
The ‘Action of the Star’ was made by Carlos Leppe at the CAL Gallery in 1979, with the participation of Nelly Richard. The room was painted white, with a text in the background mentioning Duchamp's action in 1919 and the coincidence with the star on the Chilean flag in 1979. Visual elements, such as a suspended transparent flag and a neon tube, were part of the installation. The action included the projection of the Chilean flag, followed by the drawing of a star on Leppe's head and the reading of a text by Nelly Richard. Leppe covered his head with a bag of white paint, which exploded, staining the flag and his head. He then covered his head with gauze and performed other actions, such as spreading a white cloth and writing on it with white paint. The action ended with the light being switched off, leaving only the neon on. Through photos, it is known that Leppe erased texts on the walls and deformed the structure of the flag.
