Artwork Description

This photo series was created by Polina Kanis for the project The Shift, set in a typical Soviet museum or cultural center featuring the faceless staff of the institution. Their labor remains off-camera, creating the impression that perhaps they aren’t actually doing anything at all but are merely keeping the system running through their presence alone. Everything functions seamlessly until the operations of this well-oiled machine are disrupted by the actions of one of the protagonists, who, instead of fulfilling his duties, chooses to follow his desires.
